The Spanish Supercup will be held outside Spain for the first time this 12 months after the RFEF established plans to stage the fit in Tangier, Morocco.
La Liga and Copa del Rey champions Barcelona will take on Sevilla, the cup runners-up, in the traditional curtain raiser for the season on Aug. 12, with a kickoff time of 9 p.m. CET at the 45,000-capacity Tangier Stadium.
Sevilla had rejected the proposal made with the aid of each Barca the federation (RFEF) to play the Supercup as a single recreation and alternatively wanted a two-legged affair as it has usually been the case considering that the competition’s advent in 1982.
With no settlement reached between the clubs, the RFEF’s government committee ruled that the last need to be performed as a one-off game.
“It has been a unanimous selection made by way of the committee to play the Supercup as a single sport on August 12 on a neutral ground,” RFEF president Luis Rubiales had stated in a news conference this week. “The most probably venue will be Tangier [Morocco]. We regarded other selections such as Valencia and Madrid but the monetary aspect wasn’t there.
“The temperature in Tangier will be suitable as will the financial aspect.
“One of the clubs wanted a financial compensation of €950,000 and playing in Tangier that determine will be more than met. But we have to wait for FIFA’s approval.”
It was the pattern of the game, with Sevilla breaking at pace and causing plenty of problems for the rusty Barca defence.
But as ever, they have their matchwinners. Lionel Messi hit the post from a freekick on the break, from which Gerard Pique poked in the rebound.
After huffing and puffing for much of the half, the Super Cup was decided by an Ousmane Dembele rocket from 25 yards with just over ten minutes remaining. And we even had time for a late penalty miss from Sevilla, who perhaps aren’t to fussed to have missed out on extra-time.
We hope that’s whetted your appetite for La Liga, which gets going next week. Barcelona vs Alaves and Real Madrid vs Getafe. We’ll see you then.
Most of the starters had just one week of training, and it certainly confirmed in the 2d half. Barça’s physical levels dropped in scary fashion, and regardless of a couple of substitutions through the train to strive and freshen things up, the Blaugrana simply may want to no longer keep up the tempo from the first duration and relied on Messi set pieces to create any form of danger.
Sevilla, on the different hand, had been very dangerous on the counter, and Franco Vázquez came very shut to scoring in two one-of-a-kind occasions, and the Andalusians looked closer to a intention than Barça. But the Catalans have the overwhelming benefit in character quality, and Ousamane Dembélé proved just that when he fired a rocket from outside of the field into the pinnacle corner and gave his crew the lead.
Ben Yedder came on for Mercado as Sevilla modified formations, put two strikers up top and commenced sending balls into the container desperately looking for an equalizer, and when Aleix Vidal ran into Ter Stegen inner the six-yard area, the referee gave Sevilla a penalty that is not possible to understand. But Ter Stegen was not letting Sevilla equalize that way, and he without difficulty stopped Ben Yedder’s spot kick to hold his team ahead.
The last three minutes were all about surviving the Sevilla onslaught, and Barça did simply that. The ultimate whistle came, and the Catalan giants have their first trophy of the season. It isn’t the most essential or the solely one we prefer to win, but it’s tons better to win it than lose it, and to further show that the Kings of Spain are Catalans.
